What a Cubic Meter Actually Is
A cubic meter is a cube one meter on each side — a washing machine is about 0.06 m³; a cubic meter of water weighs a tonne. It is the working volume unit of civil engineering, HVAC, and global shipping. The cubic foot is its imperial cousin: a cube 0.3048 m on a side, about the size of a large kitchen garbage bin. The two are bridged by cubing the linear ratio: (3.28084)³ = 35.3147. That cubing is why volume conversions feel larger than length ones — a meter is only 3.28× a foot, but a cubic meter is 35× a cubic foot.
The 20-Foot Container: 33 m³ = 1,165 ft³

Where the Cube Goes Wrong
The trap is forgetting the conversion is cubed. A 1% error in the linear foot becomes a 3% error in the cube; a careless "35 instead of 35.3147" quietly shaves 0.9% off every cubic meter, and across a 1,000 m³ consignment that is nine cubic meters of unbilled space — real money on a freight invoice. And the volumetric-weight rule means a mis-cubed air shipment is mis-priced twice: wrong on volume, then wrong again on the 167 kg/m³ chargeable conversion. The fix is to cube the exact linear factor (3.28084³ = 35.3147) and never round until the invoice is cut.

In HVAC, duct volume is computed in m³/s for the fan curve but specified in ft³/min (CFM) for the US ductulator — the same 35.3147 factor, applied to a flow rate.
