The short ton is the unit of American bulk. Coal trains, landfill tipping fees, gravel deliveries, and every "tons per axle" law on every state highway are written in short tons. A typical half-ton pickup is named for a payload Class that originally meant 1,000 lb; a Ford F-150 curb weight is about 4,000–5,000 lb, or 2–2.5 short tons. A crane's "10-ton" capacity is a short ton in the US and a tonne in most of the world — a 12% swing in what it can actually lift. And then there is the refrigeration ton, which shares the word but none of the meaning: a 5-ton AC unit moves 60,000 BTU/hr, the cooling equivalent of melting five short tons of ice per day.
