Start with the acre, because it is the strangest unit you use without thinking about it.

An acre is 43,560 square feet. That number is not round because it was never meant to be a decimal �?it is 66 × 660. A furlong (660 feet) was the length of a furrow a team of oxen could plow before they needed to rest; a chain (66 feet) was the width of the strip one man could plow in a day. A furlong-long, chain-wide strip of farmland is an acre. Medieval England measured land by how much a man and his oxen could do before lunch, and we are still buying and selling real estate in that unit eight centuries later. The United States Public Land Survey sliced the entire Midwest into sections of one square mile �?640 acres each �?using the same arithmetic. When you convert an acre, you are converting oxen-and-plow productivity into square meters.

That sounds quaint until you realize the acre is a squared unit, and squaring is where area conversion gets dangerous. Every area factor is a length factor squared. The foot is 0.3048 m, so the square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². Square the foot and you square every mistake you might have made converting it. Round the foot to 0.3 m, square it, and you have 0.09 m² �?a 3.1% error that is pure fiction. This guide is about not making that error, and about the one time in 2023 when the definition of the foot itself quietly shifted under your deed.

Why Area Is the Conversion That Punishes Rounding Twice

Length conversions are a single multiplication. Area conversions are that multiplication done twice and then multiplied together. A room is 30 ft by 40 ft. In meters that is 9.144 m by 12.192 m �?two separate length conversions, then a multiplication. The area is 9.144 × 12.192 = 111.48 m². Convert the area directly: 1,200 ft² × 0.09290304 = 111.48 m². Same answer, because the direct factor is the square of the length factor.

The trap is what happens if you round the linear factor first. Round 0.3048 m/ft to 0.30, convert each side (30 ft �?9.0 m, 40 ft �?12.0 m), multiply: 108 m². That is a 3.1% shortfall �?the whole room is missing a closet. Round the area factor instead: 1,200 ft² × 0.09 = 108 m², identical error. The rule that saves you is the same one as in every other conversion on this site, doubled:

1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²  (exact, because 0.3048² is exact)

The Acre: From Oxen to Real Estate to the 2023 Foot

The acre is exact: 43,560 ft², full stop. It is also the unit where the 2023 survey-foot retirement actually bites. For most of US history there were two feet. The international foot (0.3048 m exactly) governed commerce and construction. The US survey foot (1,200/3,937 m �?0.3048006096 m) governed geodetic surveying and legal land description, inherited from the 1893 Mendenhall Order. They differ by about 2 parts per million �?invisible to a carpenter, decisive to a surveyor mapping a state border.

On January 1, 2023, NOAA deprecated the US survey foot. All US surveying now uses the international foot. The catch is that millions of deeds, plats, and section corners were computed in survey feet, so a square mile described under the old foot is 43,560 survey-ft², which is 43,560 × (0.3048006096)² = 4,046.873 m² �?versus 4,046.856 m² under the international foot. The gap is 0.017 m² per acre, about 4 parts per million. On a full section (640 acres, one square mile) that is roughly 0.011 acres of disagreement �?about the size of a parking space. Nobody loses a house over it. But in a boundary dispute where the two sides' surveys were done in different centuries, that parking space is the entire case.

The engineering consequence is simple: record which foot your area was computed under. New work uses the international foot, so 1 acre = 4,046.856 m² exactly (43,560 × 0.09290304). Legacy data may carry the survey foot, and reconciling the two is a metrology problem, not an arithmetic one. The Hectare: The Unit the World Actually Farms In

If the acre is a day's plowing, the hectare is a clean decimal. It is exactly 10,000 square meters �?a square 100 m on a side. No oxen, no furlongs, just the metric system doing what the metric system does. The world's farmland, forests, and vineyards are measured in hectares; an American real-estate listing in acres is the outlier.

The hectare-to-acre bridge is the number every international land deal runs on:

1 hectare = 2.4710538147 acres  (10,000 m² ÷ 4,046.8564224 m² per acre)

A 100 ha farm is 247.1 acres. A 5-acre suburban parcel is 2.023 hectares. The conversion is exact on both ends (10,000 m² and 4,046.856 m² are both exact), so the only error possible is the one you introduce by rounding the result. Use acres to hectares or hectares to acres and the factor is carried to full precision.

Square Feet vs Square Meters in Buildings

This is where area conversion meets the building code. The International Building Code (IBC) is written in metric (square meters for occupant loads, exit widths, floor-area ratios), but American architects still draw in square feet. A plan showing a 2,000 ft² retail space must be stated as 185.8 m² on the code analysis. The factor is 0.09290304, but in practice everyone quotes 10.7639 ft² per m² (its reciprocal) because drawings list square meters and you divide.

The failure mode is an inspection failure, not a structural one. A occupancy calculation done at 10.76 ft²/m² instead of 10.7639 loses 0.036 ft² per square meter. On a 5,000 m² building that is 180 ft² of "missing" floor area �?enough to drop a required exit stair or mis-size a HVAC zone, and enough for a plan-checker to bounce the permit. The fix is to keep the exact reciprocal (10.763910417) and let the calculator hold it, not a rounded constant scrawled on a markup.

Ceiling heights and volumes compound the problem: a 2,000 ft² space at 10 ft ceilings is 20,000 ft³. Convert to metric for mechanical loads and you are now in cubic meters (565.9 m³ from 20,000 × 0.0283168) �?a third conversion layered on the second. Each layer is a length factor to some power: area is the foot squared, volume is the foot cubed. The discipline is identical and the error growth is worse: a 1% rounded length becomes 1% in length, ~2% in area, ~3% in volume.

Square Miles vs Square Kilometers: When the Map Disagrees With the Jurisdiction

The square mile is the acre's big brother �?exactly 640 acres, exactly 27,878,400 ft², and exactly 2.589988110336 km² (because 1 mile = 1.609344 km, squared). It is the unit of counties, city limits, and wildfire perimeters in the US, while the rest of the world draws the same boundaries in square kilometers. Converting a city of 100 sq mi gives 258.9988 km² �?a number no American has ever intuitively held.

The practical hazard is jurisdictional: a conservation zone, a school district, or a flood plain described in square miles on one side of a border and square kilometers on the other. The conversion factor (2.589988) is exact, but the source area is often rounded before you receive it �?"about 50 square miles" becomes 129.5 km², and then someone converts your 129.5 back to 50.0 sq mi, and the rounding is invisible until a funding formula pays per square kilometer and the district is short by the rounding. Convert from the canonical, unrounded source area, and convert once.

For long distances the same squaring rule applies as for acres: a 1 ppm length error in a mile becomes a 2 ppm error in the square mile. After the 2023 survey-foot retirement this is the only place it can still surface in legacy mapping data tied to pre-2023 surveys.
